License

by jcbollinger » Mon Apr 01, 2013 6:24 pm

Inasmuch as there are about to be (more) artifacts emerging from this effort in which there exist intellectual property rights, this seems a good time to discuss licensing. I am working under the assumption that an open-source license of some flavor will be used, but that leaves a lot of latitude. If anyone other than me contributes code (which I certainly hope will happen) then it will be much easier to have started with the right license than to change licenses later.

Supposing that an open-source license is used, the main contenders are, to my mind, GNU GPL v3, Apache v2, or a BSD-like license. Potentially, the documentation could be released under a separate license, which might be the GNU FDL v1.3 or some flavor of Creative Commons license.

Thoughts?

John
