Role of Software

Post by Peter Stephens » Sat Jun 18, 2011 2:13 pm

One issue that seems important to me is how to put the role of software into the discussion. For example, if one is describing indexing, it is important to understand how each of the major algorithms work, but the theory doesn't have much meaning apart from their embodiment in, e.g., TREOR, ITO, DICVOL. We (I) should start by looking at other IT volumes, but I wonder if people think this is more of an issue in powders relative to the content of other volumes?

Software is a key issue in a book designed to be a practical volme, and I think it needs to be referenced regulalrly in all the relevant chapters. This does mean, however, that it can get easily out of date. though thsi is less of a problem in some ways with an on-line version.

I think, my following review was usefull to find the right algorithm for the concret goal:

I have found the new possibilities with neural networks today. In the next year I will try to publish these methods.
