Moderating a bulletin board

Here is a topic that we might like to play with for a short time before deleting it.

Suppose I assert in a post that there are exactly 230 space groups (corrected by the moderator). Normally you would expect responses that would point out this error, but suppose as moderator you think it would save a lot of time and effort if you corrected this in the original post.

Can you do this (by editing the original post directly)? If so, is the change silent, or does the board retain a public record of what was changed and why? Would you like to experiment to find out?

Oh, and here's a statement that the IUCr R&D officer is an outright clown. Supposing your view is that this is an offensive statement and the whole post should be expunged. How do you do that?

Near the top left of (at least some) pages is a link to Moderator Control Panel (MCP). This has lists of posts and forums; in the posts list you can select one or more messages. These pages also have drop down menus of functions that you can perform on selections. I guess you should be able to select a post, then go to the forums list (within this MCP tool) and move it to another forum - but I haven't tried that out in full.

Moderator should use the "subscribe" button on the bottom page to receive an email when new posts occur
